The mark is a design registration mark (DRM) and, if I read your slightly unclear picture correctly, it is for a metal item with the registration date being 2_ March 1873. Note that this is the date when the design was registered; manufacture could have been at any time after that. Neither does it tell what sort of metal is used. The anatomy of a DRM is explained here.
